How to Host a Pet Friendly Event in Your Community

Choose a pet-friendly venue

When selecting a venue for your event, make sure that it allows dogs and other pets. Be sure to check if there are any restrictions or rules that you’ll need to follow, such as leash laws or designated areas for pets to relieve themselves. Outdoor venues can be a good choice as there is more space and pets can easily relieve themselves.

Provide water and shade

Just like people, pets can get dehydrated and overheated in the sun. Make sure to provide plenty of water and shade for both pets and their owners to help keep everyone cool and comfortable. Adding a shade structure like a tent or picking a park with a pavilion or trees may be a good option.

Have a first-aid kit on hand

Accidents happen, even at pet-friendly events. Make sure to have a first-aid kit on hand that includes items like bandages, gauze, antiseptic wipes, and tweezers to remove ticks or splinters.

Ensure pet safety

Make sure that all pets attending the event are up-to-date on their vaccinations and have identification tags with current contact information. Consider having a separate area for small dogs or puppies to prevent them from being overwhelmed by larger dogs.

Encourage responsible pet ownership

Remind pet owners to clean up after their pets and dispose of waste properly. Encourage them to keep their pets under control and on a leash at all times. You may consider bringing complimentary waste bags and setting out additional trash cans.

Include activities for pets

Consider including activities that both pets and their owners can enjoy, such as dog obedience classes, agility courses, or pet photo booths. A great way to get a feel for what your community is interested in is polling your audience on social media.

Partner with local pet-related businesses

Partnering with local pet-related businesses can help to promote your event and provide additional resources for pet owners. Consider inviting veterinarians, pet groomers, and pet supply stores to participate in the event. Ask for sponsors, gift cards, or items to giveaway at your event.
